Do You Know Your Weeds?

Controlling and eliminating weeds in your Alterra outdoor Landscape is the key to keeping your yard looking its best. There are three main types of weeds: grass, sedge, and broadleaf.

The best way to tell the difference is by looking at the cross-section of the stems.  Sedge weeds have a triangular shape inside the stem. Grasses have hollow circles in their stems and broad leaf weeds have solid stems.  It is also important to know whether a weed is annual or perennial. An annual is going to have a simple root structure, while perennial is going to have a big root system and will tend to look broken or torn.

The best way to maintain annual grass weeds is by using pre-emergent herbicides such as Roundup. Using these types of products prevents new weeds from growing for 6 months and can be applied anytime during the growing season- spring, summer, or fall.  Note that mowing is an ineffective control mechanism for annual grass weeds.   While annual grass is easy to control with herbicides, perennial grass is not. Perennial grass is one of the most difficult weeds to control/remove. It is best to mow and remove the seeds as quickly as possible. There are post-emergent herbicides available to help but does not guarantee an effective outcome. Most annual broadleaf weeds can be controlled with mowing and in some cases using pre-emergent herbicide. Perennial broadleaf can be controlled with mowing to remove the weeds and some post-emergent herbicides might be effective. When applying a weed controller you need to make sure to not put too little or too much. The best way to do so is by sprinkling a bigger amount each day until you see progression of the weeds being removed. Roundup  weed control is one of the most common products used to get rid of weeds. You can find this at Amazon, Home Depot, Ace, etc. Roundup weed controllers eliminate the hard work of pulling weeds physically.

Overall, controlling grass, weeds,  and other unwanted plants is a simple task to do if you are educated and have the right tools needed to keep your yard healthy and looking its best.  Alterra Design provides quality landscapes in the Dallas, Richardson, Plano, McKinney, Frisco, Allen, and Prosper areas.
